Xbox 360 Slim with the Kinect Overview   by Cherry

At E3 2010, Microsoft released Xbox 360 Slim, which is black casing and slim to differ from the previous Xbox 360. Besides, Xbox 360 Slim also comes with the built-in WiFi 802.11n and a 250 GB internal HDD.

Xbox 360 Slim Specs:

-Touch Button：users only have to swipe a finger to turn the machine on/off or eject a disc;

-Great reduction in operating noise;

-Built-in WiFi 802.11N function;

-Internal 250GB pluggable HDD;

-Support Microsoft Kinect sensor

-5 USB ports, three in the back and two in the front

-AV Ports：AV Cable + HDMI + Optical audio output;

-Smaller Voltage Stabilizer provides higher power supply efficiency;

-Changes in internal layout/ hardware configuration: One large fan takes the place of two small fans, 45nm updated chipset craft, internal integrated CPU/GPU core and WiFi functional unit

Xbox 360 slim has some important improvements, such as the 250 GB HDD, built-in WiFi, more ports, quieter sound, and so on. The black casing of Xbox 360 Slim is very cool, but it is also very easy to get the fingerprints. However, Microsoft definitely does a good job.

The Kinect for Xbox 360 Slim

At E3 2010, the motive sensor Kinect for Xbox 360 Slim is announced as well. Kinect is a kind of gaming control without any controller. The integrated sensor inside the Kinect can track you 3D motion and indentify your face, even can understand your voice command. With Kinect, you can move all the parts of your body, including the head, hands and feet.

Kinect not only can run in the Xbox 360 game console and corresponding games, but also the PC based on Windows also can utilize it to realize gesture and voice interaction.

Configuration of Kinect for Xbox 360 Slim:

RGB camera: The RGB camera for Kinect can provide the color in three channels including red, green and blue to identify the face and track the motion.

Depth sensor: the Depth sensor consists of infrared projector and monochrome CMOS sensor. Though without the complex functionality, Xbox 360 can gain real 3D positioning by it without commutating.

Multi-array Microphone: It mainly works for chatting and helps filter environmental noise to provide clearer voice for the Xbox Live users while chatting.

Custom Processor: To top it off, all the hardware of Kinect is controlled by Microsoft own software, meaning that there will not be compatible products from the third party.

The Xbox 360 Slim is now available in the U.S market for $ 300, the same price as the 120 GB PS3 Slim. Furthermore, the Xbox 360 Slim Kinect bundle (including the Kinect Adventure game) will be available in the US on Nov 4 for＄400.

Summary:

These two products Microsoft announced are pointed directly at the other two game console manufacturers. Xbox 360 Slim aims at PlayStation 3 Slim that Sony released last year, while the motion sensor Kinect is for Nintendo Wii. Not to mention Xbox 360 Slim performance, only the Kinect sensor can makes Microsoft situate the advanced status. Different from Nintendo fitness equipments, Kinect allows gamers to become the controller, and the Kinect system is also sensitive to gamers' voice, which can be called as an Omni-bearing indicator, while Nintendo Wii is still limited to the handed-only model. It seems that a new round of competition among game manufactures will begin.
