What are QR Barcodes?   by Sune Swanepoel

A QR (Quick Response) code is a two dimensional barcode(also referred to as a matrix barcode). It's identical to the barcodes being used by retail stores, with the major distinction being the amount of data which they could possess. The codes could be scanned by many smartphone cameras. Then it transfers information to the smartphone. This information could for instance, send you to a website, save a number to your phone, open text message, make a call, and so forth.

This encoded data could comprise various kinds of info, i.e. Kanji (and / or Kana) (maximum of 1817 characters), binary (maximum 2953 bytes), numeric (maximum 7089 characters) and alphanumerical (maximum 4296 characters) symbols.

The code looks like a lot of micro black squares along with three bigger squares on a white background. (Observe the accompanying QR Code.) The three bigger squares are just there to point out which direction the barcode is turned - the code could be scanned in any direction however the QR scanner program should be able to properly understand the info. The code is normally published with two bigger squares at the very top, and a single larger sized square at the lowermost left side.

QR barcodes were initially created for the motor vehicle sector - originally created by Toyota subsidiary, Denso Wave, in 1994 to observe motor-vehicles during the manufacturing process. It then became popular, beyond the motor sector in Japan, because the QR code can include a large amount of data and can be decoded at a very high speed. It then became popular in the United Kingdom, and thereafter the popularity spread worldwide.

It is however, still debateable about whether QR barcodes is likely to grow in global popularity or not, but since most smartphones currently are released with QR code-reading programs, it is likely to become (and stay) a lot more popular as some time passes.

According to a study, by June 2011, 14 million people had scanned a QR code on their smartphone. Some smartphones that have this ability (either with a preloaded app, or with a downloaded app): Blackberry, Nokia, Android and Nintendo 3DS.

Many individuals have begun taking advantage of QR codes for advertising purposes. It's a great way to combine offline advertising with online advertising. In recent times, QR codes are displayed on pamphlets, billboards, business cards and even t-shirts!

There are quite a number of of websites that a person could use to create QR codes... By searching the term "QR Code Generator" on Google, you get a a lot of results! In fact, Google themselves offer a QR Code Generator tool - however this tool is limited to URL encoding only.

Just remember that QR barcodes can be created totally free as there are folks that would attempt to charge you a fee just for this "service"!
